What Is Aeroseal?

Aeroseal is a newer technology that can go a long way in helping improve the efficiency of a property. Simply put, Aeroseal is a type of insulation that comprehensively fills any potential air leaks in a property. It does this by using equipment to pressurize a property and then releasing the insulation into the air. As the pressurized air attempts to escape the property, it pushes the insulation through every potential air leak. The insulation blocks the leaks and eventually, the property stays pressurized which indicates that there are no remaining air leaks. At Heat Loss Management, we provide a variety of insulation services including assessments, Aeroseal, blown-in insulation, and more. In this article, we will cover some additional information on Aeroseal and how it works.

What Is A Blower Door Test?

A blower door test is a commonly used assessment that can identify if there are air leaks in a property. An exterior doorway to a property is fitted with a specialized door that has a powerful fan attached to it. The fan is then used to change the pressure of the house. Because the internal air pressure of the property will be different from outdoor air pressure air is forced to move through any potential cracks, holes, or other air leaks. The term ACH50 stands for air changes per hour at 50 pascals (a unit of pressure differentials). If a property cannot maintain a different pressure than the outdoor air pressure, this is a sign of air leaks. This means that any cold air produced by an air conditioner in the summer or hot air from a heating system in the winter can go through those same air leaks leading to a decrease in energy efficiency. Aeroseal was created to help properties pass the blower door test.

What Is Aeroseal Made Out Of?

Aeroseal is a non-flammable and non-toxic material that is made of vinyl acetate and water. It is sprayed into the air during an Aeroseal project where the air then pushes it to any air leaks. Because air moves from high pressure to low pressure and home is pressurized during an Aeroseal application, the droplets of the material are pushed to any crack or hole in siding or around windows/doors. The particles collect and plug up these cracks and holes until the pressure stays the same.
